Mildred Alise Pleasants Schram
Mildred Alise Pleasants was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, August 18th, 1917. She was the first of five children born to Richard and Nancy O'Holleran Pleasants. She went to California during World War II, and became a WAVE. She served at the San Diego Naval Hospital and was honorably discharged as Pharmacist's Mate Third Class. She also worked at the Paradise Valley Sanitarium and Hospital. She met Clarence Andrew Schram [Pharmacist's Mate Second Class] at the Naval Hospital and they were married April 7th, 1944, by Chaplain David A. Sharp, Jr. When Clarence returned from Iwo Jima and the Pacific Theater, they attended La Sierra College in Riverside, California. After Clarence graduated in 1950 with a degree in Religion, they pastored with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, first in California, and then in Virginia, for over 30 years. They continued to serve even after their retirement. Clarence passed away June 24th, 2005 at the age of 81, and Mildred on April 23rd, 2009, at the age of 91.
Their two girls, Alise and Nancyan, were born in California.
Mildred [“Middie”] enjoyed taking college classes in family life and psychology. She counseled young men and women and families. Her ear was always open to listen and she encouraged many both young and old. She always had a "soft spot" in her heart for girls and their challenges and joys. She daily prayed for her family and those who requested prayer. She had what she called "a love list" of people to pray for. She would talk to people in the mall and they would ask her to pray for them.
She was very interested in health and nutrition and read and studied about those interests all her life. She went to many seminars in healthful living as well as taking vegetarian cooking classes.
“Middie” was a musician who could sing as well as play the piano, organ, marimba, and vibraharp. She loved to play for church, for senior citizen centers, nursing homes, and family reunions. She played not only the notes that were written, but a lot more, and made the music lively and interesting.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy Ann Kendall of Ft. Worth, Texas, and brother, Wendell Lloyd Pleasants, of Indianapolis, Indiana; her daughters A1ise Schram and Nancyan Lim-Chilton of Woodbridge, Virginia and son-in-law Darrell Chilton; her granddaughter Shanna Mei-Chu Lim and two great grandsons Jedaiah and Natmanusa of Silver Spring, Maryland.
The family will receive friend on Thursday, April 30, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. A funeral will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Garland Day and Pastor Rick Jordan officiating. She will be buried at the Quantico National Cemetery with her husband, Clarence.
